Sailboats Racing in the Mountains

The Carolina Sailing Club hosted the 55th Governor’s Cup Regatta at Kerr Lake’s Henderson Point Saturday and Sunday.

More than 50 boats, manned by sailors from all over the region and surrounding states, competed in the annual event, won by Jimmy Yurko of Solomons Island, Marylandd. The overall standings are determined by the

number of boats beaten in each class. Yurko’s Buccaneer beat out 36 boats in its class to claim the Governor’s Cup. Yurko won the first two Buccaneer races before claiming fourth in the final race.

Invited classes include, but are not limited to: Buccaneer, Flying Scot, Isotope, Tanzer 16, Thistle, Jet 14, 420, Laser, Lightning, 505, and Wayfarer. Yurko was followed in the

overall standings by Jeffrey Moore (Buccaneer, 33), Eric Rasmussen (Isotope, 33), Mike Sigmund (Buccaneer, 32), Steve Chobot (Isotope, 30), Tom Wille (Buccaneer, 29), Charles Buckner (Flying Scot, 29).

The next CSC event will be the Championship Series July 7-8, also out of Henderson Point. The CSC competes throughout the summer at both Kerr and Jordan lakes.
