Notice of Race

2025 Buccaneer North American Championship

July 8 – July 13, 2025

            Organizing Authority (“OA”) :  Alaska Sailing Club (“ASC”)  Big Lake, Alaska

1. RULES

1.1 The event is governed by the rules as defined in The Racing Rules of Sailing.

1.2 The Buccaneer 18 Class Association (“BCA”) Racing Rules shall apply.

1.3 RRS 60.1(a) is modified to prohibit a boat from protesting another boat for an alleged breach of a class rule.

2. SAILING INSTRUCTIONS

2.1 The Sailing Instructions (SI’s) will be made available to all entrants prior to the event via the ASC event website and at registration.

3. COMMUNICATIONS

3.1 The Official Noting Board will be located inside the ASC clubhouse.

3.2 Competitors are strongly encouraged to bring VHF radios. Radios will not be provided to competitors by the OA.

3.3 On the water, the race committee will attempt to make courtesy broadcasts to competitors on

VHF radio. The channel will be designated in the SI’s.

3.4  Except in an emergency, a boat that is racing shall not make or receive voice or data communications that are not available to all boats.

4. ELIGIBILITY AND ENTRY FEES

4.1 Buccaneer 18 sailboats will be provided by the OA.

4.2 Sailing teams shall consist of 2 competitors:1 helmsperson and 1 crew. One member of the sailing team must be a current member of the Buccaneer 18 Class  Association at the time of entry and on Tuesday July 8th at 17:00 to be eligible to compete.

4.3 Crew substitutions are not allowed unless approved by the PRO in advance.  Approvals are at the discretion of the PRO.

4.4 The event will be restricted to the first 30 sailing teams that submit a completed regigtration and non-refundable deposit of $450. The registration deadline is April 1, 2025. BCA members are limited to one registration per member. The OA will have the discretion to accept entries after the registration deadline. A sailing team’s entry may be transferable to the next sailing team on the waiting list at the discretion of the OA.

4.5 The entry fee for the event is $900. A non-refundable deposit of $450 is required at the time of registration. Full payment of the entry fee is due no later than May 1, 2025.  

4.6 A separate damage deposit fee of $500 is required to cover any damage to boats provided to entrants. The damage deposit is due no later than July 8, 2025.

4.7 Fees for the event will include the Class Banquet, boat usage (including normal wear and tear) RV parking, tent spots, shirts for helmsperson and crew and other swag. Additional items will be available at the event and on the ASC event website.

5. FLEETS

5.1 The event will be sailed in a “Round Robin” format.  The exact format of the racing will be determined by the OA once the number of entries is established.   

5.2 No individual who has placed first in A fleet or B fleet as helmsperson at a previous BNAC or won a BAC sanctioned national regatta will be permitted to compete in B fleet as helmsperson. The winner of the A fleet will be the National Champion. Teams will be assigned into fleets by the OA using past results from National Buccaneer 18 regattas or other criteria deemed appropriate.

5.3 Boats in A fleet and B fleet will start and race separately.

6. SCORING

6.1 A complete round robin of races will be scheduled for each fleet.

6.2 Four races are required to be completed to constitute a regatta.

6.3 It is anticipated that the Racing Rules of Sailing Appendix A Scoring rules will be applied.  The ability to discard one or more scores may be modified.

7. BOATS AND SAILING GEAR

7.1 The OA and provide ASC member owned, race-ready Buccaneer 18 sailboats and sails for all sailing teams.  Teams must use the boats as provided and allocated by the OA.

7.2 Competitors shall bring their own USCG approved PFD

 

7.3 Sailing wear:  Alaska experiences a wide range of weather conditions, many times on the same day. It is suggested that competitors bring both cold/wet weather gear as well as warm weather gear (80 degree temps are possible).  The lake water should be 60 plus degrees by July.

7.4 The venue experiences long days with low sun angles so eye-protection is highly recommended.  Other sun protection items such as hats, bandanas, UV protection shirts etc should be used.

7.5 Bug spray will be provided on-site but entrants may also want to bring their own products that they are familiar with.

9. PROVISIONAL SCHEDULE

It is anticipated that Fleets will be provided scheduled times for racing each day to provide the best opportunity for entrants to enjoy local activities while not racing.

            Tuesday July 8: Orientation Day

                        1100    Registration opens

                        1400    Mandatory competitors meeting

                        1500    Open sailing / practice races 

                        1900    Welcome Party

            Wednesday July 9 through Friday July 11: Round Robin Racing

                        1000    Warning signal for the first race

                        2200    No races will start after this time

            Saturday July 12: Round Robin Racing

                        1000    Warning signal for the first race

                        1800    No races will start after this time

                        1900      Class Banquet

                        2100    BCA Annuel meeting

            Sunday July 13: Final Day

                        900      Warning signal for first race

                        1300    No races will start after this time

                        1400    Awards ceremony

 

10. RISK STATEMENT

RRS 3. states: The responsibility for a boat’s decision to participate in a race or to continue to race is hers alone.  By participating in this event each competitor agrees and acknowledges that sailing is a potentially dangerous activity with inherent risks.  Risks include strong winds and rough seas, sudden changes is weather, failure of equipment, boat handling errors, poor seamanship by other boats, loss of balance on an unstable platform and fatigue resulting in increased risk of injury. Inherent in the sport of sailing is the risk of permanent, catastrophic injury or death by drowning, trauma, hypothermia or other causes.

11.ACCOMODATIONS AND FACILITES

An ASC hospitality committee will be posting recommendations on the ASC BNAC 2025 website for VRBO’S, hotels and other lodging, RV rentals, tents and cabins both onsite and off. A list of recommended excursions for both before and after the event will also be provided.
