As the candidate for Membership Chair for the Buccaneer 18 Class Association (BCA), Michael Aubrey brings a lifelong passion for sailing and a deep appreciation for the Buccaneer community. Michael joined the BCA in 2022 after attending his first Buccaneer North American Championships (BNAC) in Clark Lake, Michigan, where he quickly discovered the camaraderie, competitiveness, and welcoming spirit that define the class.
Michael's sailing journey began in the early 70’s when he learned to sail at a local summer camp. Although he sailed recreationally for many years, his interest in competitive sailing was ignited after seeing an advertisement from Tampa Sailing Squadron (TSS) promoting sailboat racing lessons. At the time, TSS was home to a large and active Mutineer 15 fleet, which provided an ideal introduction to organized racing.
Soon afterward, Michael met members of the Buccaneer fleet at a Mid-Winter Regatta and was immediately drawn to their enthusiasm, sportsmanship, and willingness to travel to regattas throughout the region. Inspired by the friendships and opportunities within the class, Michael and his son acquired an older Buccaneer, Barbarosa, which became their entry point into Buccaneer racing and the beginning of many memorable adventures on the water.
As Membership Chair, Michael looks forward to welcoming new sailors to the Buccaneer family and helping others discover the same sense of community, fun, and competitive sailing that has made the Buccaneer class such an important part of his life.
