CHAMPIONSHIP RESULTS
JUNE 21-25, 2010 - BNAC!

THREE-PEAT FOR SPIRA AND MARTINELLI!

In their closest win yet, David Spira and Dennis Martinelli pulled out a 2 point victory - their 3rd BNAC win in a row and the 6th overall for Spira - over local sailors Jeff Moore and Shawn Stanley who took 2nd place in the 40th annual Buccaneer 18 North American Championships (BNAC).

In the B-Fleet North Carolinans Jim Heffernan and Nicole Roberge stretched their lead out on the final day to seal an 11-point victory and to gain Jim permanent BANISHMENT up to the A-Fleet (Nicole, you are still welcome in the B's!)

Lots of great stories to tell....GREAT JOB JIMMY AND KRISTI!!!!

DAY 4 SUMMARY
A pile up at the pin end of the line put David Spira "doing turns" and starting near the back of the fleet to in the final race of BNAC 2010. They worked their way up through the fleet to take 6th place and local "Laser Guys" Jeff and Shawn couldn't manage to get the final "bullet".  Result, 2-point victory for Spira/Martinelli.

DAY 3 SUMMARY

After 3 days of racing the BNAC Championship remains a tight race between at least four competitors that are within 7 points of first place.  Local SMSA sailors Jeff Moore and Shawn Stanley hold a narrow one point margin over 2011 BNAC Chairman Ed Montano. Past Champions Ryan Flack and Dave Spira are on their tails in 3rd and 4th, respectively.

In the B-Fleet Jim Heffernan has staked out a strong 11 point lead but the big move of the past two days has been Amy Domaratski and Tony Wright’s move up to 2nd Place with 2 bullets on Day 3.

If Day1 was “carnage”, Day 2 was the opposite. Light winds, several TLEs in the first race and an excruciating “drifter” in the mercifully shortened 4th race of the day were followed by a nice tow line back to the SMSA docks. Speaking of excruciating, don’t forget the jet engine testing at the Naval Base that went on for over an hour…ASL became a great skill to have between skipper and crew.

Day 3, however, was perfect Bucc weather with 10-15 mph winds and a few puffs above that adding excitement late in the day.  Teams are settling into their rhythm together and so the racing is getting tighter all the time.  Fortunately since day 1 all the protests have been handled on the water rather than going to the “wood shed”.

Final day is today and the weather forecast looks light from the North with possibly no sea breeze filling in at all….Kyra is liking that after getting herself a “bullet” in that Day 2 Race #4 drifter.

As all would expect, the hospitality of Kristi, Jimmy and SMSA has been outstanding.  Great food from their Celebrity Chef Katie satisfied the hungry masses on Wednesday night before the General Membership Meeting.  This is a GREAT BNAC!

DAY 1 Summary

Yurko/Yurko Lead 40th  BNAC...THAT'S UNHEARD OF!!!!!!  Aren't they supposed to be busy RUNNING the regatta?????

The forecast was for a good old Southern Maryland "Bob and Bake" drifter day, but after a minor delay in the morning, the sea breeze filled into a SERIOUS 15-18kt breeze for Day 1 of the 40th Buccaneer North American Championships.

32 Boats hit the line together for race 1 in a dual fleet start in a lovely 6-10kt breeze.  But the serious the excitement started in  race 2 as the breeze began to build  when a handful of boats were OCS - including reigning BNAC Champion Dave Spira - and another handful layed their masts down in the water as the wind built from mild 6-10 up to the gusty 15-18 that held throughout the rest of the day.

The RC said all those "drink tickets" on Monday night must have been put into the wind machine because it was WORKIN'! and called it "carnage" for all the capsizing and one major collision - paint a message on the port side that says, "Insert Bucc here!"

Bucc' comments about the day.....

What did you like?  "Blasting down wind!"  What didn't you like?  "BEATING into that current chop! Arrrrrgh!"

"Yeah I'm thinking. HA HA they're upside down and we aren't!  Two minutes later....MAST IN THE WATER!  Doh!"

"It didn't matter if your mast was up or down, YOU WERE WET!  Sweat.  Spray.  Capsize swimming.  One way or the other, everyone was wet!"

"That hosing was the best shower ever!  It was better than the 4-Seasons in AZ after the AZ Leukemia Cup Regatta!" (uh......I'm not buying that one....but my "hosing" felt pretty good too - thanks Jeff!)
